I had the same situation. It was like all the “less than traits” were from “my family”. I flipped out and it hasn’t happened again. My extended family may have their flaws, but it was like “because of me” n children are similar.

It was the perfect opportunity to correct the kid. “Where do you think the store-bought chicken comes from?” “Do you think *everyone* from the south is ‘dumb’?” Set him straight while the husband works on controlling his mouth. If you have to, scold the husband when the kid is around to prove your point. I also suggest spending a lot more time in the south with that side of the family.
