Right after we got a new computer program they took our unit secretary away. We had to answer all the telephone calls and the doctors and nurses had to put all the orders in ourselves. Put charts together. We had to take care of family members questions about parking and directions to cafeteria etc because there was no clerk at the front desk. And this was a busy level one with a high turnover already.

Did anyone report this to their board? I mean aren’t they there to protect the public from us? If we’re outside of the hospital then we aren’t able to check call lights, bed alarms, give meds, or God forbid a code was called! I don’t know what I would do if I ever had to go back to the bedside. For one, it’s been almost 15 years since I was at the bedside and two, I don’t think I would be able to tolerate all the nonsense going on.

This is INSANE. Hospital systems can afford a housekeeper. This is a crazy inefficient use of skill and it will NOT benefit them. Why on earth are they making these insane decisions?!
