Addiction counselor who works at an inpatient treatment center here. We absolutely see that people have what we refer to as using dreams and it is definitely something that is usually addressed. Vivid dreams in general are pretty common.

I chain smoke in my dreams when I’m stressed and wake up craving a cigarette… and I’ve never smoked a cigarette. (They date back to billboards combined with work stress.)

When I fall asleep I get hypnagogic auditory hallucinations of things my coworkers said (I fall asleep like an hour or 2 after my shift) and sometimes it's not even what they said in that day. It's simply their voice talking.

I felt ashamed of myself when I woke up from smoking in a dream and that reinforced not relapsing. It was like being able to run a simulation to see how I would feel about relapsing without actually relapsing.

do you study nicotine because you smoked or did you quit smoking because you study nicotine? or are the two completely unrelated lol

I’m 22 years sober and last night I had a whopper of a drinking dream. They happen. But then it’s like Christmas morning when I wake up.😁

As someone in recovery over a decade, the only thing to worry about is what made your day so stressful the day before. This is just your brain natural release valve doing a very healthy thing by imagining and not actually doing it. Be thankful you have these dreams. And actively try to fix what is stressing out your body.

I stopped fighting dreams and cravings and instead became curious. Treating dreams and cravings as a signal to check in with myself to see what is going on within and around me.
