Who taught you to work? In the hills above Poienile de sub Munte, the answer often begins with a scythe. Before sunrise and long before engines became the norm, entire families climbed these meadows together. Children learned by watching, then by trying, until every swing became effortless. A well-sharpened blade was more than a tool. It was patience, discipline, and respect forged into steel, carrying forward a rhythm that has echoed across Maramureș for centuries. Haymaking was never simply about cutting grass. It was one of the year's great communal rituals. Neighbours worked shoulder to shoulder, trading stories, laughter, and good-natured rivalry over whose scythe sang the cleanest line across the meadow. Older hands taught the younger ones how to sharpen the blade with a whetstone, how to read the slope, how to move with the land instead of against it. Skill earned admiration, endurance earned respect, and every season added another layer to a tradition that refused to fade. In places like this, knowledge was never written down. It was carried from one generation to the next through shared labour. A sunset over these hills is beautiful, but it is the people who give the landscape its soul. Every careful swing is a reminder that traditions survive because someone chooses to learn, someone chooses to teach, and someone chooses to continue. When work becomes heritage, and heritage becomes identity, the simplest act can outlive centuries. Are traditions meant to be preserved or lived? Who would you pass yours on to?
