The wrapping marathon continues! Yet, for the first time ever I’ve got some consistent help, which means everything should head out from the studio a bit more quickly… it’s only taken me five years. Bowls are tricky pots to wrap as they take up awkward spaces in boxes. When stacking 3-4 together, I make sure there’s a thick layer of padding between them, and that when slotted together, they can’t actually move around. The entire assemble needs to feel as if it’s one wrapped vessel, not an awkward bunch of rattling and sliding bowls. It’s easier with one, like in this video, and typically I begin by making sure the rim is thoroughly protected. I place it lip down onto a folded over piece of cardboard, this adds a stiff layer around the top that should protect this fragile edge. Next, the pot is wrapped like usual, with tissue paper, a scrunched-up layer of paper bubble wrap and finally a swaddling in corrugated cardboard, this stuff does wonders, creating a hard shell, essentially double-boxing the item. Now, the boxes themselves are SUPER important. Sometimes, for local deliveries I’ll use single walled boxes, but as soon as that supply has run dry, I’ll move onto only using double-walled boxes, as they’re considerably stronger and can’t be damaged or indented nearly as easily. I even have some triple-walled boxes but I save those for large orders or for costly pieces. The wrapped pot is surrounded in biodegradable starch packaging chips and then the box itself is tightly closed. There’s no loose tape or boxes that are slightly ajar, everything is properly sealed and bound, the contents feeling as if they’ll burst out, the box stuffed as full as it can be. It’s a long, often repetitive process, yet it’s one you can’t skimp on or rush as the end result is, well, broken pottery, and none of us want that. #oddlysatisfying #asmr #pottery #unboxing #clay
