Im not sure where you read those comments, but how you’re feeling about Subaru's character right now is completely normal and is actually what the anime is trying to make you perceive about him. The Anime presents you with all his flaws and how he improves later on to become a more mature and better person. I don't want to go too in detail on the Ideas the anime develops because you'll find out as you watch. I recommend at least trying to get to episode 18 because thats were the anime starts to really shine. Unless you have a low attention span and can't comprehend the content it should be very easy to get through.

If your obsessed with re:zero characters your definitely a Gooner but I watched the whole thing like a year ago because my friends convinced me and after I finished I actually think it’s a solid show it’s just not everyone can get past s1 and understand s2 so if you pay attention and remember the personality and the theme of the show will change it’s really good

No they aren’t defending him with their lives, they want you to understand that his actions doesn’t reduce the quality of his character. Subaru’s depicted as a hikkimory with delusions of grandeur early on, it isn’t until later where he’s able to confront himself where he’s able to grow as a person. (Won’t go more in depth since it’s massive spoiler territory for arc 3)
