2019 – 4chan
The earliest known image associated with The Backrooms was posted on the imageboard forum 4chan in 2019. The image showed a seemingly endless maze of yellow office rooms lit by fluorescent lights and quickly became the foundation of the viral internet horror story. While this is the first known example of The Backrooms itself, the broader concept of accidentally “clipping” into an alternate reality has roots in earlier internet folklore and gaming culture. 2022 – YouTube
At just 16 years old, Kane Parsons (better known online as Kane Pixels) released The Backrooms (Found Footage), a short horror film based on the viral internet phenomenon. The film follows a young cameraman who accidentally “clips” into the Backrooms and wanders through a vast labyrinth of unsettling office-like spaces. Using the free 3D software Blender, Parsons brought the story to life with remarkably realistic visual effects, helping to popularise the Backrooms for a new generation of viewers. 2026 – Feature Film
Parsons’ Backrooms series gained enormous popularity on YouTube, accumulating hundreds of millions of views across multiple videos. Following the success of the series, A24 developed Backrooms into a feature-length film, with Parsons directing. At age 20, he became the youngest director in A24’s history and the youngest filmmaker ever to debut a film at No. 1 at the North American box office. The film opened to approximately $81 million domestically, setting a new opening-weekend record for A24.
