𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗤 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦 :

One of the hardest parts about being a caregiver is feeling like your heart is constantly being pulled in two directions. I love including Max. I love watching him light up when he feels seen, loved, and part of the world around him. A lot of my life has been built around making sure he feels safe, included, and celebrated. But that does not mean it is always easy. Sometimes leaving without him feels heavy. Sometimes doing something for myself makes me feel guilty before I even get there. Sometimes I hate disappointing him, even when I know I am not doing anything wrong. When you love someone like this, you want to bring them everywhere. You want to protect them from sadness, loneliness, and feeling left out. And when you cannot do that perfectly, it hurts. I try to include Max as much as I can. He is my brother, my best friend, and one of the biggest blessings in my life. But I am also learning that caregivers need care too. We need time to breathe. Time to rest. Time to have our own experiences, our own friendships, our own quiet moments, and our own lives. Taking time for yourself does not mean you are abandoning the person you love. It does not mean you are selfish. It means you are trying to stay whole enough to keep loving them well. A lot of caregivers carry silent guilt. But guilt is not always proof that you did something wrong. Sometimes it is just proof that you care deeply. So to anyone who takes care of someone they love: you are allowed to rest. You are allowed to have a life too. You are allowed to step away for a little while and still be a good caregiver. I am still learning this. Loving Max is one of the greatest honors of my life. And part of loving him well is making sure I do not lose myself in the process. Caregivers deserve care too.
