Sagrada Familia is the majestic church of the Holy Family and the largest Roman Catholic church in the world, the most visited landmark in Barcelona and Gaudi's most famous masterpiece. Much has been said and written about it, but there is always room for more interesting facts - 10 facts about the Sagrada Familia that you probably didn't know: 1. Construction of the temple began in 1882 and is expected to be completed in 2026 (the construction is planned to last 144 years). 2. Gaudi believed that human work should never surpass God's, which is why the Sagrada Familia is predicted to be about 25 cm lower than the highest natural point in Barcelona. 3. It was built entirely with donations. And that is why Gaudi wanted it to be built one piece at a time, so that people could see what it would look like and be inspired to donate more. 4. Currently, the Sagrada Familia has eight towers. However, by the time it is finished, it will have 18 - the tallest representing Jesus, another for the Virgin Mary, four for the Evangelists and 12 for the Apostles. 5. Gaudí's work was largely inspired by nature. Evidence of this can be found in the columns inside the Sagrada Familia, which are built to look like trees with twisting branches. 6. To sculpt the faces on the Portal of Mercy, Gaudí used models of the workers' faces. This was his way of paying homage to them. 7. The mosaic on the roof of the church is meant to guide sailors home by reflecting the moonlight, turning it into a kind of lighthouse. 8. In 1936, during the Civil War, Gaudí's workshop was blown up. The workers managed to recover the models and use them in the construction, but only with the help of an architect who was hired specifically for the restoration. 9. Two people are buried in the crypt: Gaudí and Josep Maria Bocabella, a bookseller who came up with the idea for the Sagrada Familia. He was inspired by the churches he saw in the Vatican during his visit there in 1872. 10. George Orwell, one of the most famous English writers of the 20th century, said that the church was "one of the most disgusting buildings in the world." #sagradafamilia #españa #spain #barcelona #antoniogaudi #architecture #tourism #барселона #испания #туризм #саградафамилия
