A lot of books came to mind but Les Miserables is one that I have loved for so long— the way the bishop gives Valjean the candlesticks at the beginning of the book, and Valjean decides to turn his life around reminds me that like the bishop I could have the opportunity to do something kind for someone else, and it could have a greater domino-affect than I could ever predict

What a great list! Wouldn’t think of All Fours, but I did feel it was so insightful to that midlife, perimenopausal experience in a way I hadn’t read before. Really loved everything you pulled together. Beloved is just a given atp.

So, my top two are probably The Gift of Fear and The Plague which are already on your list. I think I would add How Far the Light Reaches which really gave me incredible insight into othering. And also The Sunflower which is a must read on the concept of forgiveness.

I know I'm late but mine is one I've never seen anyone talk about anywhere apart from the friend who recommended it to me years ago: Seven Hanged by Leonid Andreyev. I read the newer translation by Anthony Briggs (others may be good too, not sure, but that's the one I'll vouch for -- I think it's important given the nature of the book). Just ~100 pages but one of the most profoundly human things I've ever read

I love this: “A perfect world isn’t possible but a better world is.” I’m definitely stealing such a simple and true statement.
