Stand By Me turns 40 today, and River Phoenix was originally auditioning for the wrong role. It was adapted from Stephen King's novella The Body, tested poorly under that name, and only became Stand By Me after Reiner heard the Ben E. King song at home and built the ending around it. King watched an early screening and reportedly couldn't speak afterward, then told Reiner it was the best adaptation of his work he'd ever seen. Forty years later, still true.
