Rough Rapids Ahead :
You don’t have to excavate all of your clay, but you do want to get organic material much deeper to improve it. You can plant lots of Daikon Radish and then chop off the tops before they go to seed. These specific radishes have zero problem growing deep into clay, and then over time they’ll rot and return good organic material deep into the soil assuming you don’t pull them up to eat.

New build???? Just give up now and put down AstroTurf, you won’t regret it but will regret all the time effort and money you will spend trying to get grass to grow.

As a farmer with very heavy clay ground (animals grazing and Equestrian areas built on said clay ground), your best bet would be removing a good 8-12 inches of clay from the surface, putting ‘drainage holes’ into the remaining clay and filling them with sand or a 1inch chipping with a membrane over it, then adding a lighter soil blend over the top as your final layer. Great job in the meantime! A good grass seed will help too - look into the best for your needs - fast growing or durable etc. can get mixes of different grasses to work best for you and your family

I personally would have put 1 ton of sand, and 1 ton of compost, then rotovated it all into the ground together to give you a top that is a little better.

Its all about the clay. Unfortunately need to get rid of at least a foot then put decent topsoil down, then do what your doing. You need a decent base for anything to work. Otherwise it will just go boggy when it rains and dry out when its hot

I’m shocked they didn’t have grass or anything installed prior to moving in. New builds around my area in Texas aren’t allowed to close until they have grass sod installed.

Having also got a new build with heavy clay, I’d recommend some gypsum to try break down the clay, also you’ll need a lot more organic material.

If you have any stables nearby they normally let you collect the manure for free. We get ours that way so I have more money to spend on the plants!!
