@calmmoneycoach: I got a ton of great feedback on my last lease vs buy video. People in the industry were commenting which was really cool and validating. But two things kept coming up: insurance and cash vs financing. So I went way deeper. Pulled better data. Built a free calculator that compares all four strategies (buy new, lease + buyout, perpetual lease, buy used) over 10 years with real Canadian numbers. The result? On a Honda CR-V in Ontario, the gap between leasing with a buyout and buying new is $80 over 10 years. Eighty dollars. At that point the decision is about monthly cash flow, not cost. But this changes dramatically by vehicle. That’s why the calculator exists. What’s included: . 12 popular Canadian vehicles preloaded . All 10 provinces with correct tax rates . Insurance, maintenance, tires, fuel, everything . Cash vs invest comparison (TFSA, RRSP, non-reg, GIC) . Qualitative benefits of leasing tab Every number is sourced. Surex, Rates.ca, J.D. Power, CRA 2026 limits. Free download through my subscriber list (link in bio): kit.com/calmmoneycoach/lease-vs-buy This is personal finance. The personal part comes first. Run your own numbers. Sources: Surex Insurance Study (2025), Rates.ca, J.D. Power (2024), CRA 2026 automobile deduction limits, Thaler & Benartzi (2004) #leasevsbuy #carbuying #personalfinancecanada #calmmoneycoach

Counterpoint: buy a beater or two. I’ve got a 23 year old truck and a 25 year old car. I paid $1,100 for the car 6 years ago and $1,600 for the truck 3 years ago. Total maintenance is less than $2k/year for both. Total insurance for both is less than $2k/year. Mind you, something is usually broken on one of them, but it beats selling my soul for heated seats and a nice paint job.

Brian, you continue to produce great content that all Canadians should see. Vehicle costs add up quick, make sure you know how expensive they get.

This is pretty specifically an Ontario problem but could you run this simulation with a Tesla? They have a notoriously high insurance premiums….i wonder if it still makes sense given the current gas costs.

I always lease because I am in a high tax bracket so leasing is a before tax expense.

I worked for multiple Ford dealerships in Ontario so I’ve seen leasing take off in the early 2000s. We were trained to push a lease because it keeps the customer coming back at the end of their term. Real life I have never leased aka rented a new car, I have always owned my car and bought them a few years used. You get an extended warranty and you own the car and can resell vs return and take a bus home. Leasing is for companies as it was designed for but today the marketing of auto manufacturers have changed the game..
