also, because we are accustomed to functioning regularly at a pain level 4 or 5, our pain level 9 doesn't outwardly present to others that we are in that much pain. we look almost fine. honestly, why suffer in an uncomfortable waiting room when I could suffer in the comfort of my own home? trust if I'm desperate enough to go to e.r it's BAD. but they can't see pain.

I use my curse of chronic pain as a power for change as an ER nurse. I have compassion for those with chronic pain and advocate like crazy for pain management with my patients. As a flight nurse, I have the honor of being in charge of deciding, monitoring and justifying analgesia. That has been my favorite part of my career.

"you're so young, there's no way you have this much pain" "your pain can't be this wide spread, you need to be more specific" "with your medical history you should know some amount of pain is normal" -_- I just stay home or see my primary care asap if it gets too much.

We avoid the ER during true emergencies because of that very reason.

As someone who suffers with chronic pain, I now avoid at all costs, it’s not worth it, I’ll just cry in the comfort of my own home. 🥺

as a person with an auto immune disorder. I am told to go into the er with any form of fever and or severe pain...I even have a standing order.....I get told its not serious and go home take cold meds or Tylenol for pain. without bloodwork, without properly looking at my history...its also in my head and I should seek mental health help becuase im too young for rheumatoid arthritis and the other issues I have going on

This is how I ended up with gallstone pancreatitis 😂 I just ignored gallstone pain forever because I hate the way the ER treats me.

I have been told that if I were truly a 9 on the pain scale, I would be in tears and barely able to speak. uh, I have chronic intractable migraines. a 6 is a baseline normal.

Had pain so bad I was vomiting and couldn’t stand up. Didn’t go because I figured it would pass, and I didn’t want to get labeled. What was the point. Probably just a ruptured cyst or ovarian torsion. Who knows. Figured I’d get through it or I wouldn’t. There was no much of a point.

My blood pressure shoots up when I can’t control my pain. I went to the ER for pain a few years ago with a bp reading of 200/100 and they didn’t even address it. I found out how high my BP was when I saw my after visit summary notes

As someone with chronic pain and BPD, I do not get taken seriously and get left either in the waiting room or in a bed for hours on end without actually seeing anyone

I literally have such extreme health anxiety BECAUSE of the fear of going back to A&E with so many chronic illnesses. My migraines sometimes feel like a stroke but I don't go because I know I will be dismissed and just leave more exhausted & traumatised :(
