Long before highways linked Lagos and Kano, steel rails were already stitching Nigeria’s North and South together. In 1896, work began at Iddo, Lagos, under Governor Henry McCallum. The line reached Abeokuta in 1899 and Ibadan by 1901, then pushed on to Jebba on the Niger in 1909. Meanwhile, the Baro-Kano line started from the Niger riverbank in 1907 and reached Kano in 1911. Only the great Niger crossing at Jebba was missing. When the bridge was completed in 1916, Lagos and Kano were connected by one continuous line of roughly 1,100 km. In 1912, the two railway systems were already being administered as one “Nigerian Railway.” The effect on trade was dramatic. Kano’s famous groundnut pyramids, along with cotton, hides and tin from the Plateau, rolled south to Lagos for export, while imported cloth, salt and manufactured goods travelled north. Towns like Ebute Metta, Offa, Minna and Kaduna grew around stations, workshops and rail camps. Thousands of Nigerians moved along the line to find work, and Lagos and Kano became closer than ever before. But this was no neutral story. The railway was built under colonial rule, and its routes were planned to move troops, officials and raw materials to the coast. It served extraction and control as much as connection, and its legacy is still debated today. #HistoricalLagos #LagosHistory #NigerianHistory #NigerianRailway #LagosRailway BaroKanoRailway JebbaBridge KanoHistory GroundnutPyramids ColonialNigeria NigeriaBeforeIndependence OldLagos LagosIsland IddoTerminal EbuteMetta AfricanHistory WestAfricanHistory
