My mother taught me a few years back, after this had happened to my aunt (her sister), that when you set the pot roast and ingredients on high.. just before you set the lid on, grab a piece of foil and just set it on the pot, then the lid places on top of it. It kept the lid separate from the food, just in case the lid shatters.
