Becoming a parent made me recognize how many cycles my mom broke which was truly incredible. And also how many cycles she didn’t. And that I am now trying to break for my kids. Yay therapy I guess 🥺😝

My number one take away, I do not understand my father. I do not understood how he chooses not to know us really.

Wow. Mic drop. I think I struggled with focusing too much on being who I needed at first, and I’ve been working on changing that mindset!

This is the most relatable parenting post. I caught myself the other day thinking about how I try to hard to “not be” all the things from my own family that I catch myself doing the things and really internally punishing myself from my screw ups that it trickles over into how I parent my own little and its difficult because I’m like “oh she’ll for sure need therapy from me. But not for the reasons I needed therapy” I too— despise those phrases. Thank you for sharing!!

Yes, becoming a parent has caused so much deep pain that I didn’t know was there. My dad was basically not present except for his weekends and paying child support and now I watch him be totally present for my niece, while being totally absent for my kids. When my daughter turned the age I was when my dad left (13 months old), I cut off communication with my dad. Having children made me realize I’ll never understand his choices because… how?

The “I’m desperate to be the parent I needed” part hit HARD.

I am so much more aware of every choice the adults around me made as a child. I already had a hard time coping with my childhood but it’s even crazier now. I’m breaking ALL the cycles! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

my mom still uses the "you'll understand when you're older" on me, I hate it as much at 32 as I did as a kid

For me it’s a few things but the biggest is when I have a bad day (I’m 11 weeks PP and in the thick of PPD) I never put that on my daughter.

Absolutely, we were told so much growing up “oh that’s just how they are” when people were not great humans and now I just don’t understand that. I would never tell my child that when someone does something that hurts him or he doesn’t like!

I realized how selfish my parents decisions were. They didn’t decide everything to protect me, they held me back for their own uncontrolled anxiety. I’m actively not doing that.

I have the privilege of a self aware mum who is able to see the things we’re doing differently and appreciate why we’re making those choices. She told me recently that she wouldn’t change a thing we’re doing, and if she’d known better would’ve done things how we’re doing them. The other 3 grandparents on the other hand are making us question every choice that was made..

My partner and I both have parents that did really good and really bad at complete opposite things & it’s been so hard to deconstruct at the same time while raising kiddos

It’s because they don’t want you to be disappointed in them in the moment so they push it off.
