@tapridch: hi, i'm tatiana 👋 i'm a professional ux / market researcher, an audhd eldest daughter, and a triple migrant (russia to germany, and now rebuilding my life from zero in london). on this account, i don't do generic career advice or romanticize the "expat" aesthetic. i use my professional background in behavioral research and critical theory to decode why the systems we live and work in are actually breaking us. i spent 6 years studying why users abandon digital products. now i use that exact same framework to analyze why we burn out, quit toxic jobs, and leave entire countries. i made this carousel because i am exhausted by immigrant women blaming their career burnout on "imposter syndrome" or failing to adapt to a new culture. when you move your entire life to work in the european tech sector, you aren't just dealing with a language barrier or quirky office habits. you are stepping into a deeply entrenched psychological architecture that was never designed for you to win. before you diagnose yourself with a lack of resilience, or schedule another therapy session to fix your "confidence" at work, swipe through these slides. you don't need to fix yourself. you just need to understand the structural game you are being forced to play. which country's unwritten corporate rules completely broke your brain? let's complain in the comments. . working in germany as an expat | german corporate culture explained | toxic startup culture berlin | why expats leave germany | moving from germany to london | imposter syndrome at work | neurodivergent burnout recovery | signs of a toxic workplace | unwritten rules of the workplace | career advice for immigrant women | how to spot a bad company culture | working in tech europe | tech industry burnout | audhd career advice | highly skilled migrant visa | navigating corporate politics | why i quit my job in tech

And you were living in Berlin. I lived in countryside Germany for 7 years, as an immigrant, woman and latinamerican. I have university degrees and +15 years (at the time) of corporate experience. I speak Spanish, English and German. I went to hundreds of interviews. It was impossible to get a job.

Regarding point 2: once you speak the language you can be part of the game. Like in any corporate environment you need to build your networks though.

I feel this is applicable to any ‘corporate environment’ and not just Germany. I’ve worked in corporate roles in Germany, France, Belgium and the UK and experienced it everywhere….I turned my back on corporate for a reason!!

As a German working for the government I am bound in many ways to very strict rules. but it amazes me how much people are against optimization of processes. The most common sentence you hear is "das haben wir schon immer ao gemacht" Secondly there is such a lag of communication between the different departments. instead of working against each other a little small talk and trying to understand what the other does goes a long way.

I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. Living and working here has made me dumber, less innovative, and risk averse. Curious to know where you moved to? I’m contemplating what should be my next move.

As a German having gone through a few jobs in tech, I can verify this. If you want Innovation and restructuring, you will need some luck. Best way to find this is to go into smaller companies with smart management. This might take a while though.

I am actually working in a Berlin company trying to get rid of all those points you mentioned and when they detect any of mentioned issues in some team, its management gets fired. But I really like the post since it formally defines how a broken system looks like.

corporate is overrated everywhere. I quitted my corporate job for a stable low-income job in a Greek island and never questioned myself or my judgement again

These bullets points can be applied to a lot of countries such as Canada and even within some sectors in the US. Very well articulated and worthy of a proper LinkedIn article.

As someone half German having lived in Berlin for 10 years. And worked in the corporate scene. All of these points are correct.

GDPR should not block anything, unless you totally disregard normal privacy expectations. There are very few things that are not permissible, mainly to do with automated decisions, some AI, very sensitive data. You just need to go through the required assessments and allow for things like data subjects requests, potentially opt ins and outs, check notices

If you have a great idea or have identified an opportunity, start your own business and make your own rules. That's the best advice I can give to people who are selling their time for 0 equity in the corporate/tech ladder.
