THIS MIGHT SEEM OBVIOUS TO SOME OF YOU… But if you’re a high school teacher trained to teach students how to organize and analyze texts, this will be a helpful tool in helping students that struggle with reading comprehension! Reciprocal Teaching enhances reading comprehension by engaging students in dialogue, where they predict, clarify, question, and summarize text collaboratively. This interactive approach fosters deeper understanding, critical thinking, and self-monitoring skills, promoting active and effective learning. Reciprocal teaching involves four key steps: 1. **Predicting:** Students make predictions about what they expect to find in the text. This encourages them to activate prior knowledge and set expectations for reading. 2. **Clarifying:** Students identify and address confusing or unclear parts of the text. This step promotes active engagement with the material and helps students overcome obstacles to comprehension. 3. **Questioning:** Students generate questions related to the content. This fosters critical thinking and encourages students to interact with the text on a deeper level, prompting discussions about key concepts. 4. **Summarizing:** Students synthesize the information they’ve gathered from the text, creating a concise summary. This step reinforces understanding and helps students articulate the main ideas and key details. These four steps are cyclic, forming a continuous process that enhances reading comprehension through active student engagement and collaboration. HOW CAN YOU IMPLEMENT THIS STRATEGY? Give students a worksheet with all four sections: predict, clarify, question, and summarize. Put students into small groups and have them read the story together and discuss each section of the worksheet. After students have practiced this process several times, you can release more responsibility to them individually by having them complete the worksheet independently before coming together in small groups to discuss!
