the way this couldve been solved but NEGLIGENCE got in the way… • thank you to @True Crime w/ Liv for sharing this story! • On November 17, 1978, in Speedway, Indiana, four Burger Chef employees—assistant manager Jayne Friedt (20), and teens Daniel Davis (16), Mark Flemmonds (16), and Ruth Ellen Shelton (17)—disappeared between 11 p.m. and midnight after closing the restaurant on Crawfordsville Road. Initially believed to be a petty inside theft—just $581 missing from the safe—no struggle was evident and the scene was cleaned by employees the next morning, severely compromising evidence. A fellow employee’s discovery of Jayne’s abandoned car and the back door left open, along with jackets and purses still inside, triggered suspicions of kidnapping. On Sunday afternoon, hikers found all four victims’ bodies in a Johnson County wooded area. Davis and Shelton were sh*t multiple times; Friedt was s**bbed twice with a sharp weapon whose broken-off handle was found in her body; Flemmonds had been bludgeoned and ch**ed on his own blood. Their valuables remained on them, suggesting motives beyond robbery. Investigators theorize a botched robbery escalated—perhaps after Flemmonds, working an unscheduled shift, recognized a suspect—triggering panic k*ll*ngs. Sightings of two white men—one bearded, one clean‑shaven—led to composite sketches and clay busts. A barroom boast and later a confession by inmate Donald Forrester provided leads, including shell casings matching the murder weapon, but the confession was recanted and no arrests made. Despite continued investigation—including FBI document releases, revived witnesses, and a 2022 documentary—no one has been prosecuted. The case remains one of Indiana’s most haunting unsolved crimes, with memorial oaks and plaques honoring the four lives lost. #BurgerChefMurders #ColdCase #SpeedwayIndiana #TrueCrime #UnsolvedMystery
