So how did coral reefs become what they are today with millions of years of no human interaction?

Reefs are cool but they come and go. there are some thousands of feet below the water and some hundreds of feet above it.

To those that don’t know, the creature there is a Crown of Thorns Starfish. They are voracious hunters with no known predators. They can multiply and destroy entire reefs with impressive speed. Physical damage to them is nearly impractical as their regenerative abilities are incredible. They are not immune to injections like what we see in the video. The diver here is helping control an invasive species.

Coral cover less than 1% of ocean and support a quarter of all marine life. Reefs do a lot more than you think, look it up. These starfish are booming in numbers because of humans, overfishing in particular. If divers like this guy aren’t actively fighting them, these ecosystems would collapse. They’re already battling to stay alive with climate stress.

What were their predators then if we killed them. Saying their is no known predators has a very different connotation than that of humans killed their predators.

FYI to the comment section "NO KNOWN PREDATORS" means its a species that has had their predators hunted into extinction or into farms. so since we are the cause of that it is also our job to fix it.

for those wondering why...
humans have messed up the planet in almost every way possible. over hunting the natural predators of animals that now choke out all other species in their area. we also introduce species to areas they dont belong and woth no natural predators they strip out resources from those that belong in that ecosystem. hes trying to correct some of that damage
