Part 3/4 One Brother Was Dead. The Other Had a Story to Tell | Forensic Files: Sibling Rivalry In February 1991, a violent confrontation between two brothers at a home in Corte Madera, California, ended with one brother dead and the other facing a murder charge. Artie Mitchell, a successful adult-film entrepreneur, had been shot multiple times. His older brother, Jim Mitchell, was found outside the home carrying a rifle shortly after the shooting. Jim admitted firing the weapon, but the most important question remained: Was this a case of self-defense, or had Jim deliberately killed his own brother? In Forensic Files Season 6, Episode 23, “Sibling Rivalry,” investigators and prosecutors turn to forensic audio analysis, ballistic evidence, and an unprecedented computer-generated crime-scene reconstruction to examine the conflicting accounts of what happened that night. What makes this case especially compelling is that a 911 call made during the shooting captured sounds that would become central to determining the sequence of events. The Mitchell Brothers: Business Partners Turned Rivals Jim and Artie Mitchell were well-known figures in San Francisco’s adult entertainment industry. Together, the brothers built a lucrative business empire that included adult films, theaters, and live entertainment. Their success brought them money and notoriety, but their relationship was complicated by years of personal conflict. According to accounts presented during the investigation and trial, Artie had been struggling with alcohol use and increasingly troubling behavior. Family members and associates described concerns about his condition, while Jim maintained that he wanted to intervene and help his younger brother. But the relationship between the brothers would end in a fatal confrontation that raised questions about family loyalty, motive, and whether a claimed attempt to help someone could explain the use of deadly force. The Night Artie Mitchell Was Killed On February 27, 1991, Jim went to Artie’s home in Corte Madera, just north of San Francisco. Jim later claimed that he was trying to persuade Artie to seek help for his drinking and that he had brought a firearm for protection. Artie’s girlfriend, Julie Bajo, was inside the home. When gunfire erupted, she called 911. Police responding to the emergency found Artie dead inside the residence, with fatal gunshot wounds. Officers soon encountered Jim outside the house carrying a rifle. He was taken into custody, and the investigation quickly focused on what had happened inside. Jim acknowledged shooting his brother, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting were disputed. His account and the prosecution’s theory differed sharply on whether Artie had posed an immediate threat and whether the fatal shots were fired during a struggle or as part of a deliberate attack. The 911 Call That Captured the Gunfire One of the most important pieces of evidence was the emergency call made by Julie Bajo. Although she was not watching the shooting unfold, the recording captured several gunshot-like sounds in the background. Forensic acoustics experts examined the recording to determine which sounds were consistent with gunfire and whether they could be matched to the rifle involved in the case. Experts also investigated the timing between the sounds. The intervals mattered because they could help establish whether the shooting occurred in one continuous burst or whether there was a pause between shots. The analysis became particularly significant because prosecutors argued that the gunfire did not tell the story of a single, instantaneous defensive reaction. Instead, they contended that the timing and sequence of the shots supported a different reconstruction of the events. The recording could not independently answer every question about the shooting, but it provided investigators with a crucial timeline to compare against the physical evidence. #truecrimetok #truecrime #crimetok #crimejunkie #truecrimestory
