this dude showed up in my dm recently and tried to prove that the war is just putins fault, and his only argument was "collective responsibility doesn't exist"

I'm not trying to exaggerate when I say the vast majority of Russians I know here in Finland think Russia and Russians are superior. even when they choose to live here there's this constant flavor of disrespect towards Finland, sometimes more and sometimes less. have I also met Russians who aren't like this? yes, but honestly they're few and far between.

This is the biggest problem. There is no dictator without people who protect and agree with the regime. Putin is just a projection of russians.

My aunt from Togliatti would come every summer. Walk around, go shopping with us, visit cafes etc. spoke russian to everyone around her. And even if some people didn’t respond in russian, they still understood her and gave her what she wanted. Then in a week she would go back home and tell us how terribly russian language is suppressed here

The further a person is from russia and the less they know real russians, the more they prove that this is "putin's war", in contrast to russia's neighbors, who know full well that putin is just a reflection of russian people

This isn’t just a misunderstanding — it’s dangerous naïvety. In 2014, many people in Donbas thought the same way as that commenter. Most of the men from that region were taken and sent straight into the conflict, treated as disposable.
In the currently occupied areas, people are still being forced to join the Russian military. If they refuse, they face pressure and punishment.
And let’s be clear: around 90% of the invading forces are regular Russian army troops, not “local volunteers”.
This didn’t start yesterday — it has been going on since 2014. They had more than ten years to understand what they are doing, yet they continue crossing the border to fight.
From my own experience moderating online communities, the problem isn’t only the government. A lot of the hostility comes from ordinary people who can’t stand the idea that someone else lives better than they do. That frustration turns into aggression. So no — it’s not only one person’s fault.

I mean Putin is a super popular leader in Russia So it kind of makes it to people's fault there because they still support him. At the same time it's not their fault that their teachers fall for the propaganda.
