“I know some of you may have heard rumors about changes happening within our airline. I cannot discuss company matters over the public-address system, and I won’t speculate about anything that hasn’t been officially confirmed.” I blinked. Rumors? Changes? What was he talking about? Mason looked up at me. “Is Daddy in trouble?” “No, sweetheart,” I whispered quickly. “We don’t know that.” But even as I said it, I remembered something Tyler had told me three nights earlier. He had come home late, placed his flight bag beside the door, and stood in the kitchen staring at his phone. When I asked what was wrong, he said work had been stressful. I offered to make him something to eat. He shook his head and told me he wasn’t hungry. Then he kissed my forehead and went upstairs. I had thought he was simply tired. Now, sitting in the back of his plane, I wondered whether I had missed something important. Tyler continued speaking. “I also want to thank the people who have supported me throughout my career. Flying has been my dream since I was a little boy. I know how fortunate I am to be here.” His voice softened. “But a dream is only one part of a person’s life. Sometimes, we become so focused on chasing it that we fail to notice how much the people we love are carrying for us.” I looked down at my hands. Why was he speaking this way? Why did he sound as though he were saying goodbye? Then the announcement ended. “Thank you for flying with us today. Our crew will keep you updated, and we appreciate your patience.” The speakers clicked off. For a moment, nobody moved. Then the cabin slowly filled with quiet conversations. Mason stared toward the front of the plane. “Mom, why didn’t Daddy say our names?” I swallowed. “I don’t know, sweetheart.” “But he said someone he loves very much.” “Yes.” “That’s you, right?” I turned toward him and brushed a curl away from his forehead. “Of course, baby. Your daddy loves us.” “Then why didn’t he say our names?” I had no answer. I pulled him closer and kissed his forehead. “Sometimes grown-ups have things they need to explain. We’ll talk to Daddy when we get the chance.” Mason looked down at the drawing in his lap. It was a picture of a blue airplane with a smiling pilot in the front window. Beneath it, he had drawn three stick figures holding hands. One was tall. One was small. And one had long hair. He had drawn our family. “Maybe he forgot about us,” Mason whispered. Those words cut deeper than he could possibly understand. I pulled him into my arms. “No, baby. Your father has not forgotten about you.” “Then why doesn’t he come home more?” I went still. For years, I had answered that question with explanations about work, weather, schedules, and responsibility. But hearing it from Mason on a plane his father was flying made me realize something painful. Children do not measure love in career achievements. They measure it in empty chairs at school events, bedtime stories read over video calls, and birthdays celebrated a day late. I hugged him tighter. “Daddy loves you more than you know.” Mason looked up at me. “Then I want him to know I love him too.” He held up his drawing. “That’s why I brought this.” I kissed his forehead. “He will see it. I promise.” Just then, a flight attendant began walking down the aisle. When she reached our row, she stopped. “Excuse me, ma’am?” I looked up. “Yes?” “Are you Mason’s mother?” My stomach dropped. “Yes. Is something wrong?” She glanced toward the front of the aircraft. “Would you mind coming with me for a moment?” Mason immediately grabbed my arm. “Where are you taking my mom?” The flight attendant smiled gently. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. Nobody is in trouble. I just need to speak with your mother.” I looked at Mason. He looked terrified. “I’ll be right back,” I promised, touching his cheek. He shook his head. “No. I don’t want you to go.” I had never seen him look so small. I wanted to tell him that everything was fine, but I could not make that promise when I didn’t understand what was happening.
