Why it Doesn't Appear to Melt
People often panic when the snow doesn't immediately drip into a puddle. This happens for two main reasons: [1, 2]
Sublimation: The flame's intense heat causes some of the ice to turn directly into a gas (water vapor), skipping the liquid phase entirely. [1]
Capillary Action: A snowball is packed with tiny air pockets. As the outermost layer melts, the porous structure of the snow sucks the moisture back into the center like a sponge. [1, 2]
it turns black due to the soot from the lighter.
