Most pain originates on the surface of things, skin, muscle, tissue. Your body feels it, signals danger, and you react. Bone cancer is different. It attacks from the inside of the most structurally fundamental part of your body, in a place that has almost no ability to expand or relieve pressure. Here is what is actually happening. Bones are filled with nerve endings. When a tumor begins growing inside a bone, it does not just sit there. It actively starts destroying the bone tissue around it, releasing acids and chemical signals that directly attack the pain-sensing nerves in the surrounding area. Those nerves then begin to grow new fibers, up to 70 times more densely than in healthy bone, essentially multiplying the pain signals being sent to your brain.At the same time, the cancer triggers the body's own bone-destroying cells to go into overdrive, eating away at the bone structure from the inside. This weakens the bone until in some cases it simply fractures on its own. Spontaneously. Without any impact. The pain starts as a dull, deep ache. Like a toothache, but in your skeleton.
