If your family immigrated to America after 1965, you owe your presence here to the Black freedom struggle. When politicians like Vivek Ramaswamy dismiss Juneteenth while praising Memorial Day, they are erasing the very history that allowed them to be American. Memorial Day’s Black Roots: On May 1, 1865, newly freed Black Americans in Charleston, SC, exhumed and properly buried hundreds of Union soldiers from a mass Confederate prison grave, holding a massive parade to decorate them. They created the blueprint for the holiday. The 1965 Immigration Act: Before this law, racist quotas legally barred immigration from Asia. It was only overturned because the Civil Rights Movement forced the federal government to dismantle systemic racism. Without Black Americans bleeding for civil rights, the modern South Asian diaspora in America wouldn't exist. No movement, no 1965 Act, no Vivek Ramaswamy. Using anti-Blackness to buy proximity to power isn't just a strategy it’s a betrayal of the sacrifices that gave you a voice in the first place. #BlackHistory #juneteenth #civilrights #BlackTikTok #vivekramaswamy
