However, as of April 2026, the MD-11 is facing its most significant existential crisis following a fatal UPS crash in Louisville in late 2025, which led to an emergency FAA grounding of the entire type for safety inspections. In response to this tragedy and the high costs of maintaining aging tri-jets, UPS officially accelerated its retirement plans and phased out its entire MD-11 fleet in early 2026, shifting operations to Boeing 767 and 747-8 freighters.
