Millions of people, in different languages, chose the same instrumental piece to score the moments that mattered most. The algorithm doesn't explain this. The score, perhaps. • The score features a four-chord progression in F# minor that doesn't resolve — it returns. Einaudi recorded the original version at Villa San Fermo, a 17th-century monastery where the stone walls became part of the sound. The natural reverberation of the space is inside the recording like an instrument nobody credited. Daniel Hope played violin alongside the ensemble I Virtuosi Italiani, and Einaudi's instruction was simple: build in a spiral. Each layer should sound like the same landscape seen from closer up. There is no harmonic development. There is accumulation. And accumulation, when done well, is indistinguishable from emotion. • This recording is from December 2023, at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan — the city where Einaudi studied at the Verdi Conservatory forty years earlier. He returned to the stage to play Experience ten years after composing it, for an audience that sold out the tickets in hours. The camera closes in on the hands. Not on the face, not on the audience — the hands. And what you see is not virtuosity. It's restraint. The fingers hold each note as long as they can before letting go.
