The first thing the average weekend warrior would have to deal with is the greens. Your local golf course greens probably roll at around a 9 on the stimpmeter. But at Augusta? They can get up to 15. That’s ridiculous. And when you combine that with the insane undulations, even a 5% slope can send your ball rolling across the entire green… That’s why you see around 80% more three-putts at Augusta compared to a normal Tour event. With greens like that, it becomes incredibly difficult to hit the ball close. The flat section where you can actually land your ball might only be a few feet wide. You’ve probably also heard players say how hilly Augusta is on TV. However slopey you think it looks, add another 30%. That’s a big reason why Augusta ranks as the toughest course on approach shots, with players finishing an average of 31 feet from the hole compared to the Tour average of 26 feet. So with that level of precision required, plus the added challenge of uneven lies, it’s already looking pretty bleak for the average golfer. And to make things even harder, let’s throw in a moderate breeze, which is famous for swirling through the trees and causing chaos across the course. And last but not least, could you handle the pressure of playing Augusta? Or would you crumble at the thought of teeing it up at the most iconic golf course in the world? So for an average golfer playing off a 15 handicap, we’d estimate a score somewhere between 100 and 110 on a good day at Augusta.
