My hot take on tracing: Artists who don’t trace won’t get very far in their art journey. I didn’t start seeing MASSIVE improvement in my art until I started tracing pics of people.

Thank you!!!! Coz it’s so annoying. I’m a HOBBYIST who wants to draw my OCs…I work 10 hr shifts as a scientist & I’m also a writer & adult with responsibilities. I don’t wanna spend 50 years learning the fundamentals LOL. I’ve been learning them slowly over time. But sometimes i just wanna paint my characters and not spend 20 yrs on the anatomy.

Thank you for saying this I needed to hear this a few times i started drawing at a young age and I was always put down for tracing and now for using magic poser then started just not to care when I started digital art last year but recently I’ve like “dang I’m doing it again” but at the end of the day it’s my process and it looks good

Also, i can promise you that if someone is a beginner, tracing isn’t a magic tool that will make their art perfect or flawless. You need some skill to turn a traced sketch into a good finished painting!

I hate the sketching part but love the painting part. You will never see me actually sketch something out in full. I trace, colour block or block values, but I don't see the need in struggling for hours to sketch something out, when I'm trying to get better at realism, I just adapt where necessary during the painting process

atp we should have a word tp differentiate between tracing as in directly copying other ppls art, and tracing as in just using tools like taking pucs of yourself and using them as a base sometimes 😭

Hot take nobody should tell anyone how to learn, we are all different people and learn in different ways, just dont say it’s not traced:/

the masters in the Renaissance started their apprenticeships as children and part of the learning process, they would trace over the current art master's drawings.

I’ve always said that by tracing it helps you build the mechanical skill to learn the anatomy and dynamic postures you may have trouble with. In the long run you begin to autonomously learn and develop your skills faster as well

people forget that a lot of professional painters that do commissions tend to trace from a projector or something so that they can do the art quicker

Call me lazy I don’t care I love tracing over a reference photo, especially for tricky things like hands or foreshortening. I will say taking the photos themselves can be a humbling experience tho 😂

I take photos of myself too🤣 I've never understood why people are so against tracing for learning. it's like the people who say using a reference is cheating too

Tracing over photos is a great way to learn anatomy. Trace hands, trace feet, trace the width of the torso and its relation to the hips. Tracing photos is a great tool to learn how to draw those things on your own later once you’ve built your confidence

as someone who uses 3D models to trace for poses I personally prefer doing that as I just want to draw and trying to draw poses and doing the studies takes the fun out of drawing for me and when I can't get it right it's disheartening

Most of the time I trace a pose or something because I don’t wanna use hours to try and get it right when it’s the coloring I wanna do and I don’t even post my art but it still stresses me out 😭

I genuinely don’t think tracing stuff like 3d models is that deep at all, you still need skill in anatomy and art in general to trace over a 3d model and make it look good. It’s just two different skill sets

The amount of times I've traced a real photo (like a human face) just to break it down in it shapes and proportions then re-create that sketch is unreal and every time it helps so so much with proportion. Sometimes people genuinely just need that physical learning experience instead of visual
