This is the exact way I feel when people complain about counters. like we don't say "two slices of paper," but we do say "two slices of pizza"

To me, kanji is just learning words. It takes a long time to learn words.

So, as a Spanish speaker, can I still complain?

colonel being pronounced kernel is the most kanji thing ever. Also, lieutenant being lewtenant or leftenant depending on you're from

I'm currently learning kanji, I'm just trying to find a balance with my studies. I initially tried learning 25 kanji a day, but had to stop after 300 because I was neglecting vocab, but YOU'RE absolutely right. kanji is time consuming, not difficult

Some years back, I met a Japanese guy who was traveling the US and talking to random people to work on his English. Upon learning that I spoke a little, he asked if I found kanji hard to learn Explained to him the exact same thing about it being slow and time-consuming, but not actually difficult, which still seemed to surprise him. I also found Japanese songs on YouTube were a great way to come across readings in their natural usage rather than a giant list of every reading at once. Taught me the difference between things like 流星 and 流れ星. Same 2 kanji, 4 different readings.

my same thought on pitch accent. if you can understand the difference between reCORD and REcord, you understand pitch accent and why it's important.

I’d say we also have a lot of symbols that work like kanji, like: &,@,£,#,*,+,=,etc. even more if you consider a lot of symbols used in shorthand that aren’t available on a standard keyboard.

as my nan pointed out while talking about crosswords several hours ago, despite looking identical, "flower" and "flower" can be pronounced completely different. as "flower" as in plant, or as "flow-er" as in a river or something that flows

I actually think Kanji is fun. I use WaniKani and just doing my daily drills is enjoyable and it really does start clicking after a bit. Now practicing listening and speaking I hate. but gotta persist anyway.

As someone whose mother language is not English (and whose mother language doesn't do the whole multiple-sounds-per-letter thing), and who regularly struggles with pronouncing English words and is learning Japanese atm, I love this.

my pet peeve as someone that has learned both Japanese and English as second languages are people that say "Japanese grammar is so difficult" when it's incredibly logical and has so few exceptions, while English has insane tenses and convoluted auxiliary verb usage 😂

This has really opened my eyes. I'm not someone who's really complained about kanji, but it has been difficult for me because I'm just learning. This will help me understand them better. Thank you.

I get you. I am a beginner, and honestly, I think I am not stressing too much about kanji when I come to it. おもしろい人です。日本人です。See, baby steps! We can see and do it!

taking ten years is hard because well that's a lot of time you gotta find for it in those. which ups the difficulty of your life because you now have to slightly rush everything to still fit all the things you do plus the kanji thing into a day

lately I've been explaining kanji to people as being like acronyms (specifically in the way radicals work), like the "T" in "TNT" would be different from the one in "SAT", but there are also potentially multiple TNTs in different contexts. but i am not a certified smart guy so idk
