It’s Men’s Mental Health Month. So, as someone who has struggled with this for the better portion of my life, here are some things I’ve learned in the event they are helpful to those "in the club" (or who love them). When it’s bad and you can barely get out of bed? Get in the shower. Hot and then cold water to change the energy. Then, put on your shoes and start walking. A tiny energy shift + endorphins boost. Music. Those records that remind you of how capable of joy and hope you are. That person is still inside of you, and they can sing that song with you. Consider medication. Even if the ones you used before didn’t work out. It’s not the same for everyone, but my SSRI’s are an enormous part of my current stability. And it took me a while to find the right one. Talk. Just saying what you’re feeling out loud is so helpful. Turn a light on it. Chase away even a few inches of the darkness. Service. There is so much pressure to live our best lives, we can feel like failures for not thriving. And we often obsess over ourselves and beat ourselves up. Putting your energy towards helping others can simplify your focus and help find meaning in a new way. Rescue pets are excellent for this. If therapy isn’t working it might be because you don’t have the right therapist. They’re a lot like relationships: a good one is the greatest, but a bad one can be more harmful than helpful. It takes trial and error to find the right one. Sleep is critical. I sleep 8 hours and I take naps. I don’t apologize to anyone for it and I guard it with my life. Meditation is great, but often difficult to consistently practice. Consider a quick mantra at regularly scheduled times during the day. For me it’s “Relax. Enjoy.” 3 deep breaths. Set a regular alarm on your phone or wear a device that buzzes every hour to remind you. Lastly: you will not get this right all the time. That’s okay! Try to giggle off your shortcomings. If you can get on the winning side of this thing 51% of the time, you’re doing really well. Sending you all that 100 foot wave of hope. And remember that if you find yourself heading somewhere scary or new, 988 LIFELINE is a just a text/call/chat away. ❤️✌️
