I recently read a book where they started as “enemies” and he slowly started calling her by her nickname and then when he was upset with her he called her by her name then proceeded to have an inner monologue to draw my attention to the fact that he didn’t call her by the nickname because he was so upset. Like damn I noticed and as a reader I could have surly figured it out

You give really solid advice. I like how these are things that a lot of writers do think about, but they aren't usually acted on bc we don't really know how to explain them. One thing about that last one...it's worth noting that in today's world of EXTREME sensitivity, we really need to be careful presenting morally questionable actions. By all means, write them in. Just watch out for the trap of making them feel ok just bc that character sees them as justifiable. You could easily shift reader feedback away from how much they did or did not like your book and onto whether that one action was morally justifiable.

I get very annoyed when show vs tell advice is always framed as “describe the actions related to emotion” - which often ends up equaling purple prose. This is great advice.

I feel like a lot of these come through naturally with really strong characterization. like, I can tell how much the author is able to lock in to that character while writing when these little things are used, as compared to someone making barbie dolls read off a script, if that makes sense

I remember playing the wayhaven chronicles. and one of the small ways the writer showed Mason was getting attached to the MC was by having him slowly standing around them more and more.
