I never viewed it as hazing. It always seemed like letting the player have their moment to take it all in.

in what world is a rookie lap a hazing tradition? I have always seen it as a moment for the rookie to get out and have a few seconds to themselves to soak up the fact that they are finally in the NHL.

It’s celebratory. They should do it. It’s a big deal to play your first game in the NHL

A rookie lap is the exact opposite of hazing

Bruins needed a bit of a culture change and they initiated that last year by trading Marchand. So seeing them not clinging too hard to the past isn’t a bad thing.

The rookie lap is a neat way for fans to get to welcome the player—it’s like a mini graduation! That said, it should totally be up to the player if they want to do a lap or not.

does the player still get fined for doing a rookie lap with no bucket? I haven't heard of anyone getting fined in the last while , or does the team just cover the fine and it gets swept under the rug?

Am I the only one who assumed that I rookie lap was like a right of passage and an honor? Maybe that’s just the theatre kid in me where we all like a moment in the spotlight.

Back in the day early 2000’s and prior the rookie lap was actually a prank played against the rookie. Letting the rookie lead the team out on the ice without the team following behind him. Not sure when it changed, but it’s a cool moment for all rookies and glad it’s used to celebrate an accomplishment.

Comments section don't realize how much Chara is about being team first kind of guy. He's a smart guy, he thought this through a lot. If a rookie feels bad or embarrassed or shy from someone's actions, then the rookie cannot perform well which ruins the team's chances at winning. This rookie doesn't mind the rookie lap now but back then the kids really didn't like the ribbing

Oof. I had no idea it was a hazing thing. I thought it was sort of a nod of acknowledgment towards the rookie for having finally made it.

I am a lifelong Bruins fan. Those days were the Big Bad Bruins. These are the Big Bad Carebears and I mean that affectionately. Traditions evolve. Let the kid have his moment.

I always thought it should be up to the play or whether or not they want to take one. I kind of felt not giving them the opportunity might make them sad because most teams do it and it’s a kind of a cool thing. But if it’s hazing and makes them nervous, then they shouldn’t have to do it.

I feel it's not a hazing, and a right of passage having a rookie lap.

Rookie lap feels less like hazing and more like an honorary moment, no? Like congrats you made it, take a lap by yourself and soak it in

I never looked at it as hazing. I thought it was for the player to enjoy finally playing in the NHL & taking it all in. Do players actually view this as hazing? I thought it would be their “I made it” moment.

I've always seen a rookie lap as honoring the rookie. A brief moment at the start of their career where all eyes are on them.
