Ofejiji Waterfall: A Natural Wonder Lost to Power and Neglect Deep in Ofejiji, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, there was once a beautiful waterfall a gift of nature, a treasure to the community, and a potential tourist attraction waiting to be discovered by the world. But today, its story is one of loss. A natural wonder that could have attracted tourists, created jobs, supported local businesses, and put Ofejiji on the map was reportedly destroyed through the actions of people in positions of power. It is painful to think about how many beautiful places across Nigeria have disappeared, not because nature failed us, but because the decisions made by those entrusted with power failed to protect what we had. Imagine what that waterfall could have become. Imagine visitors travelling from different parts of Nigeria to experience its beauty, young people earning a living from tourism, and the community benefiting from a natural resource that had existed long before many of us were born. Instead, we are left asking questions. Who protected the interests of the community? What happened to the vision of preserving our natural heritage? And how many more treasures must we lose before we begin to appreciate what we have? Ofejiji’s waterfall is more than a story about a destroyed natural feature. It is a reminder that development should not mean destroying everything that makes a place special. Progress should preserve our heritage, empower our people, and leave something valuable for the next generation. Sometimes, the saddest part of travelling is not discovering a beautiful place. It is discovering what used to be there. Ofejiji had a waterfall. It could have been a destination. Today, its story deserves to be told. This is Unknown Routes uncovering the beauty of our land, telling the stories others may never hear, and reminding the world of the treasures we must never take for granted. #Dekina #explorepage✨ #kogi #travel #igala
