In vanilla Minecraft, it is infinite in depth (extending 2^1024 blocks) and appears black in the Overworld and Nether, but purple in the End. Falling into the Void causes instant death in Survival mode, depleting health by about 4 hearts every 0.5 seconds once below the damage threshold (typically under Y=-128 in Java Edition or Y=-81 in Bedrock Edition). This damage cannot be prevented by armor, Totems of Undying, the Resistance effect, or Protection enchantments, though survival is theoretically possible with commands granting infinite health or constant Regeneration effects. Access to the Void is naturally limited by bedrock layers in the Overworld and Nether, but it is legitimately accessible in the End due to gaps between islands.
