I remember watching a video about the difference between male and female friendships. The video argued that if you look at a lot of female friends, they will often sit or stand opposite each other. They will stare at each other. Men, though, tend to stand side by side, looking at something external to them both. They will play golf or a computer game. They'll look at their kids on the monkey bars as they chat. The video argued that this might be to do with evolutionary predation, because staring at somebody is predatory. It's intimidating, and so men don't do it. But C. S. Lewis argued this many years before, and he had a different theory. Lewis argued that friendship is defined by shared attention. It is when two people come together to do some shared task or activity. And if you look at child development, there is evidence to say that if a child and their parent points at something like an aeroplane in the sky or a cloud, they will bond over that shared attention. But this shared attention in friendship is rarely as obvious as pointing at the cloud. It's normally about interests or passions and tastes. Friends will go to the same concert, to watch the same sport, read the same books, talk about the same things. Because while lovers might be absorbed in each other, friends are mutually absorbed in something beyond themselves. And so, Lewis argues that we should see friendship as a kind of teamwork. It's when you and somebody else come together to block out everything else. You block out the world, and you say that you and I will do this thing, and we will do it together.
