The north country fair Dylan’s poetic name for northern Minnesota — specifically the Iron Range region where he grew up. The first paragraph sets the scene of Dylans former love, “Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline” refers to the harsh winters and the actual U.S.–Canada border. This song is a letter from Dylan to his former girlfriend who he left behind when he went to live Minesota for New York. “If you go when the snowflakes storm / When the rivers freeze and summer ends” This is not just literal winter weather. Dylan masterfully uses a double entendre, the weather plays the role of a metaphor for loneliness, yearning, despondent, isolation. The image of a river freezing is often used to describe the transition from a "flowing" relationship to the coldness of a breakup. While changing of the seasons signify the loss of youthful summer love symbolically depicting their moment together and union of happiness. This denotes powerfully the emotional devistation of heartbreak as a winter. “Please, see if she has a coat so warm / To keep her from the howlin’ winds” The “coat so warm” is the central metaphor. It is not about actual clothing. It stands for emotional protection, care, and love — something to shield her from the pain of being left behind. The “howlin winds” symbolise loneliness, heartbreak, and the cruel forces of life regret, time, or the emptiness left after love ends. Dylan is asking a friend to check if she is being looked after, if someone is giving her the warmth and safety he can no longer provide. “I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all” The questing that lingers in the mind of a heartbroken man, does she still keep the sweet moments of shared love, tender affection, gentle care. Doubt being invasive by nature, evokes raw emotions of vulnerability and self doubt. Dylan's separtion from her makes him question weather she is a distant memory, fearing she has moved on while he hasn't. “Many times I've often prayed” Here Dylan seeks comfort in prayer, perhaps to lighten her heart. He hopelessly longs for the intimate connection they had. Through prayer in God, the search for a higher power and the refuge that prayer provides for belivers is a comfort Dylan seeks. “In the darkness of my night / In the brightness of my day” Here he juxtaposes with depth of meaning streaching deeper than the river, “In the darkness of my night” here he spaks to the lowest point, darkness of the night being lonliness and depression. It is in the night when the quiet of the commotion we can have quiet to reflect and process our emotions, unvailing the heart of dispair. The antithesis is ”In the brightness of my day” here Dylan shows just how deep his affection and care for her runs, permeating through to the day when all is swell. He vows to rember her even under the bright lights and big stage in New York. ”She once was a true love of mine” The final line of the song, Dylan describes her as not merely a love but rather a true love not casual neither temporary but real deep authentic love that matters. he cannot escape the fact that he once had something genuine and precious — and he chose to leave it behind. The past tense “once was” does two painful things at once: It acknowledges that the love is finished. It keeps the memory alive, as if he is still carrying her with him in his heart. By repeating this line at the end of the first and last paragraphs, Dylan turns the whole song into a lament. #TheFreewheelinBobDylan #1963 #folkrock #lament
