@reels.classics: 🌅🎶 Edvard Grieg — Morning Mood (Morgenstemning), Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46 Szymanowski Music School Orchestra — Wojciech Pławner 🎻 • Everyone knows this melody. Almost no one knows it describes a sunrise in the Sahara — not in Scandinavia. In 1867, Ibsen wrote Peer Gynt as a dramatic poem, with no intention of staging it. Seven years later, he changed his mind and sought out Grieg. The composer's reply to his friend Frants Beyer was almost a confession of defeat: he called the task "terribly intractable" and spent months without writing a single note. The result of that creative torment became one of the most recognizable melodies in the history of music. • The score calls for Allegretto pastorale in 6/8, E major. The melody alternates between flute and oboe using a pentatonic scale — five notes that sound natural to any ear, in any culture. That's why you recognize it without ever having studied music. And there's a detail that flips the logic: the climax isn't at the end. The first forte represents the sun breaking the horizon, and then the music settles. Grieg composed the opposite of a crescendo — he composed an arrival, not a wait. • The performers here are the Orchestra of the Karol Szymanowski Music School No. 4, from Warsaw. They're students — many of them teenagers, in everyday clothes, without the formality of the professional circuit. Conductor Wojciech Pławner leads with broad, almost choreographic gestures. And there's something in this performance that a professional orchestra would struggle to replicate: the flute that opens Morning Mood is played by someone for whom the piece is still a discovery, not a routine.
