In the us they dont use sim anymore. But in other countries outside of the us we do use physical sim. Only the iPhone air that i know of only use esim

Go to settings, general, about, and then scroll down to carrier lock it should give you the status of the eSIM

I’ve got Canadian iPhone 16 Pro and I’ve got an eSIM on it but it still has the SIM card slot and therefore the option for a physical SIM

Btw you can check if it’s carrier locked or not that will tell you if you can swap it to another carrier or if it’s still being paid off

The future of this happens if they have the same on their phone, they could do a fault the phone transfer and go into settings go to cellular eSIM and you click transfer from Phone on the new phone and it will allow you
