POTUS hit out at the pontiff in a Truth Social post on Sunday, branding him “weak” and “terrible”, while suggesting the Pope thinks it’s, “OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon”. Trump went on to claim Pope Leo was only appointed because he was the president, saying: “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.” He later continued the comments to reporters from the tarmac, stating: “He’s a man who doesn’t think we should be toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon so they can blow up the world. I’m not a fan of Pope Leo.” Over the weekend, Pope Leo suggested that a “delusion of omnipotence” was fuelling the US-Israel war on Iran. In comments, late last month – days after Trump’s secretary of war prayed for violence against enemies who “deserve no mercy” and for “every round to find its mark” – the Pope stated that God “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war but rejects them”. The Pope added: “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen – your hands are full of blood.”
