@countrymusicflashback: Nashville Sideman, Accidental Icon Before “Take This Job and Shove It” made him a household name, Johnny Paycheck spent years in Nashville as a sideman and session bassist — playing behind legends like George Jones and Ray Price rather than headlining himself. The song that finally broke through wasn’t even one he wrote. David Allan Coe wrote “Take This Job and Shove It,” and Paycheck’s recording of it became the lead single from his 1977 Epic Records album of the same name. The track hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Country chart in January 1978, crossed over to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and spawned a 1981 film of the same title in which Paycheck himself appeared in a cameo — a long way from playing bass in someone else’s band.
