I would love to hear your take on mothers with sons.

Left my hs sweetheart/husband of 19 years after discovering his infidelity. But when I left I thought he was good. I thought my marriage was good. I’ve been on my own for 18 months and I am not exaggerating when I say I’m an entirely different person. It’s been such a revelation. I did not even know I was capable of happiness like this.

My husband died suddenly in 2023. 27 years married. I thought we were happy, stable. After being on my own for 2 years, I can only NOW see how unhappy I was. It is subtle. The daily walking on egg shells in my marriage, the daily emotional management I performed to keep us both happy. You can’t see it till you’re out of it.

I feel this so deeply, I broke up with my partner 3 weeks ago because I felt drained and exhausted of being the one in charge of everything in our lives. When I tried to explain to other people the reasons, it sounds so small: picking up his laundry every day, reminding him of chores, making decisions… after years together it just felt like I was carrying everything and I felt abandoned by myself. I decided to let go and endure the heartbreak because I am still in love but I refuse to abandon myself. My energy is coming back and choosing myself has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

This resonates so much. The 4 years since i left my husband and have been living alone have been the sweetest peace and joy I’ve ever known. I feel like I hadn’t seen myself in a decade or more.

I never married. I never wanted to. I highly recommend. I'm 47, free and free from a lot of long term relationship trauma

I basically only had casual relationships until I was 46 - almost three years with my partner and I recognize how much of myself I’m losing. Idk what to do honestly - I like having a relationship but I do not want a man centered existence.

My Grandparents are both retired and in their 80s. My grandad just sits and does nothing still after all this time. Even though my grandma's health has deteriorated a lot and he's the picture of health, she's the only one who does anything. They are visiting right now and I just wish he wasn't here.

it became real for me once I had my daughter. I couldn't see it before and now I can't unsee it. I'm divorced of course 😂

I’ve been married 48 years. Worked full time and did ALL the house hold jobs. I did them automatically. Every now and again i’d get fed up and complain. Nothing really changed. I look back now and get so angry with myself. The worst is I can see the same pattern emerging in my daughter and granddaughter.

I’m very grateful I have access to great advice from women like this so I don’t have to learn the hard way🥹 23 years of singlehood and counting✨

I find this is happening with my young adult son even though even he refers to me as a hard-core feminist. I love him dearly but I'll be okay when he moves out.

The early days after getting a divorce is like recovering from a really bad flu with a fever. When the fever finally breaks and you get your first good nights sleep, you wake up in the morning just knowing you’re on the mend. You have an appetite again and compared to the fever flu, you feel amazing. You’re still sick, still tired, but it gets better every day.

I’ve been out of my marriage now for almost 10 years and only within the last 3 to 4 have I truly seen the full scope of the effects of patriarchy on my life in the world at large. The distance you have to have from that is imperative to being able to see it for what it is. And once you see it, you can never go back.

I'm 78 and never married, just for this reason. So no regrets there, but have always seen how my mom made herself so much smaller than she really was. Very sad to see.
