At the age of ten, Granata moved to Belgium. Like many Italian immigrants, his father worked in the Waterschei (Genk) coal mine. Against his father's wishes, Granata wanted a different life: as a musician. From a very young age, he played the accordion in his own small orchestra: "The International Quintet." He toured Belgian Limburg with his group with his successful show, Manuela. At 18, he composed his first song with the same title, but no record company was interested. So Granata released it independently, supported by a dance hall owner. Because there were two sides to a 45 rpm record, Granata hastily scribbled down a few lines for a B-side, and due to lack of time, the chorus was finished with "Oh no no no no no." This became Marina.
