Watching an A380 thunder down the runway, it’s easy to miss just how much air it’s manhandling. In only about 10 seconds of takeoff roll, its four engines chew through roughly 45–50 tons of air—that’s the mass of a fully loaded semi-truck, every couple of seconds, being ingested, compressed, accelerated, and blasted out the back. But the engines are only part of the story. The wings are doing something even more staggering. Every second, on the order of 70–100 tons of air flows over and under the wing surfaces. More importantly, to keep a 500-ton aircraft in the air, the wings must force hundreds of tons of air downward every second—likely in the range of 300–700 tons/sec being meaningfully deflected. So that graceful liftoff you see isn’t gentle at all—it’s the aircraft continuously grabbing vast masses of air and hurling them downward to lift itself skyward.

I live on the flight path to BHX and used to work there. This beast flies over my house about 1.30pm and is going so slowly it makes you wonder how it stays up there.
