if you feel it's an obligation when someone generously tell you to let them know if you need anything, i think it says more about you and your character than them.

I’ve had hundreds of interactions where I asked if my friends/family/employees needing anything where they had absolutely no problem saying so. What a bizarre and out of touch stance to take

This is correct. You just do something. You don’t ask to do something. You say “I’m at the grocery store. I’m picking you up food/tp. Are you home?”

As a mother who lost her 13 yrs son, people who would say that to us would mean well but we never even knew what to ask for. Plus we were so overwhelmed with everything for well over a year. It’s the people who jumped in and did stuff without asking that truly meant the most. They really did help us in that way. We had friends that would come answer our phone, we had friends who would help carpool our other children, friends who took care of our lawn, friends who ran errands for us when we didn’t even feel like we could get up out of our chair. So incredibly generous!

What? People tell me what they need all the time 😂 if they aren’t telling you what they need then you haven’t built trust with them that they believe you will help them

I had someone say that to me and when I went to them for help, they drove right by without stopping. I feel the let me know...is a way out for them so they have no obligation to you to help. What should be said is, "I'll check back tomorrow to see if there is anything I can help with." That way they determine if they are sincere and truly want to help.

So true!!!!!!!!! Dropping off something without knocking on the door is best Or send restaurant gift card I'm a cancer patient - I don't want visits cause it feels like I have to entertain them A friend left a little vase of garden flowers on my front step! Perfect! I don't want them to accompany me to chemo - that needs to be a zen / quiet experience- not 5 hours where I have to entertain you!

As a person experiencing cancer, this statement is the worst to hear. Nobody takes action, ever. I need LOTS of help but many of times I can’t think straight. I would love to hear a friend said, “Can I make you food or clean your house?” The specific action is far better than hearing,”Let me know if you need anything.”❤️

Sorry, but saying, let me know if I can do anything is like when people say hi how are you? They’re not necessarily really asking how you are unless you actually know them personally if you genuinely want to help someone you know what the situation is so offer them generosity or support in a tangible way not just in a statement

Try this: “listen, I appreciate what you’re doing, I’m gonna do this other thing for you. Don’t worry about it, I got it. I’ll let you know when I’m done, take care” they say, please, don’t worry about it. You don’t need to do that, just say “all right I appreciate that, but I’m gonna do it anyway. No stress.” just completely take it out of their hands. 100%.

I dont like empty sentiment. I say good luck or hope it goes well. if I say I can help if you want, let me know. people that know me, know i mean it. im not going to force myself into it, but I can help. and I said I can help, whatever it is youre doing I can help with it. or I say, good luck.

I say let me know if you need anything, I can do this…and I give them a list and tell them I’m open to things I haven’t considers well. A friend did that for me and it was glorious and a great lesson.

It's a generic send off for me. it says "im done with this task but open to discuss/go farther with it". some people just overthink stuff

This is good professional supervisor advice - not meant for close friend situations where obviously more intimate interactions can/will occur.
My boss always says "let me know if there's anything I can do", when he knows exactly what he could do to help, but doesn't care/want to. So it never feels - nor becomes - helpful. And I do experience a weird obligatory (burden) feeling, which ultimately deters me from seeking their offered "help".
