My son is extremely intelligent but led a one man revolution against homework. The last time I went to the high school about him was that his lowest test score was 97/100 but he was failing every class because he won’t do homework. I said well, obviously he grasps the material or he wouldn’t be acing tests. As it stood he was going to fail. I took him out immediately and did homeschool. He went from tenth grade to graduated in less than a year. He didn’t go to college but none of mine did. I’d think with me having gotten an Associate, Bachelor and Master’s degrees when they were kids would have some impact but maybe it had the opposite effect. All of my kids could read by three and my two year old grandson is reading sight words already. My kids are so smart.

I think they should stop doing those stupid state testing. There are so many kids that have a hard time with testing . Because of the fact that every kid is different and learns differently. The testing is stupid if they don’t pass the stupid test it hurts their self esteem and then the chances is then graduating at all are way less . It’s not the act they need to get rid of it’s the testing .

College isn’t for kid anyways . Some kids once they graduated may just want to just do a trade because they don’t like school or struggle in school at least they graduated .

I agree with you 100% all kids are different. They are not cookie cutter images that you can do the same thing with each child. I thought no child left behind way back. Then when I was teaching was stupid to me it was made by people who are not real teachers in the classroom.

I am a K–2 ESOL teacher, and I’ve always taught in the primary grades. I’ve also taught SPED, and as a parent, I have two children with a reading disability and one who had no problems at all… so I’ve seen this from every side.
I 100% agree—being told “it’s probably just language” is frustrating. Really? Kindergarten is language for every child. But if they don’t develop those foundational skills in K, they will struggle in 1st—and they don’t just magically catch up.
And it’s not just academic. It impacts everything—confidence, behavior, social interactions… all of it.
And don’t even get me started on those summer birthdays.

Imagine us as high school teachers when they get to us and are still reading on a 4th grade level!! I get it, and I agree. I taught 10th English (state tested year). Imagine it being my fault when someone didn’t pass but came to me on a 4th grade level. I don’t know the solution, but no child left behind isn’t it!
