Organized by the N€zi Party rather than the regular army, the Volkssturm consisted largely of poorly trained civilians, including teenagers and elderly men. They were often inadequately equipped, relying on outdated weapons or simple anti-tank devices like the Panzerfaust. Despite their lack of preparation, Volkssturm units were sent into combat during the final battles on German soil, most notably in the Battle of Berlin. Their military impact was minimal, but their deployment resulted in heavy casualties and highlighted the desperation of the N€zi leadership.
