Paul speaks of a figure who exalts himself, taking a place that belongs to God alone. John goes further and says the spirit of antichrist is already at work wherever something created is given the devotion meant for Christ. This is not about labeling any one person as the Antichrist. It is about recognizing the pattern. Whenever a leader is elevated beyond their place, whenever hope is transferred from God to man, whenever someone is portrayed as if they can save, restore, or redeem, this is the same ancient temptation.
